Fall Lawn Care Checklist for DuPage County: What to Do Before Winter

From the last mow of the season to protecting shrubs from winter burn, here is a simple checklist to get your lawn and beds ready for winter in the western suburbs.

Fallen maple leaves in autumn

The lawn slows down in November, but what you do now shows up next spring. Here is a short checklist for homeowners in Lombard and the western suburbs to work through before the ground freezes.

1. Keep mowing until the grass stops growing

Cool-season grass keeps growing into the fall, often into early November here. Keep mowing on a regular schedule until growth stops. For the final cut, aim for about two and a half to three inches. Grass left long tends to flop over and mat under the snow, while grass cut too short is more exposed to winter damage.

2. Stay ahead of the leaves

Do not let a thick layer of leaves sit on the lawn for weeks. Mulch light layers with the mower and remove heavy ones. Our fall leaf cleanup guide covers when to do each.

3. Plan aeration for the right time

For the cool-season grasses common in DuPage County, early fall is the best time to aerate, usually September into October. If you missed it this year, put it on the list for spring or, better yet, early next fall. Lawns with heavy clay soil or a lot of foot traffic benefit the most. See aeration and power raking.

4. Clean up the beds

  • Pull out annual flowers that have finished.
  • Cut back perennials that have turned brown and mushy. Some gardeners leave sturdy seed heads up for winter interest and birds, which is fine.
  • Clear leaves out from around shrubs and the base of the house.

5. Hold off on pruning spring bloomers

Lilacs, forsythia and other spring-flowering shrubs have already set next year’s flower buds. Pruning them now cuts those flowers off. Save the trimming for right after they bloom next spring. More on timing in our bush and hedge trimming page.

6. Water evergreens before the ground freezes

Evergreens like arborvitae and boxwood keep losing moisture through their needles and leaves all winter. A deep watering in late fall, before the ground freezes, helps them hold up against dry winter winds and reduces browning, often called winter burn.

7. Get ready for snow

Before the ground freezes, mark the edges of your driveway and walks with stakes, and move hoses, decorations and anything else that could get buried. Our guide to getting your property ready for snow has the full list.
