Lawn Aeration and Power Raking

Aeration pulls small plugs of soil from the lawn so air, water and nutrients reach the roots. Power raking clears out the layer of dead grass that builds up at the soil line. Both help a tired lawn grow back thicker.

What is included

  • Core aeration across the whole lawn
  • Power raking to remove built-up thatch
  • Overseeding after aeration on request
  • Cleanup of raked thatch
  • Watering and mowing advice afterward
  • Homes and commercial lawns

What aeration does

Over time, soil gets packed down by foot traffic, mowers and heavy clay, which is common in the western suburbs. Compacted soil keeps water and air from reaching the roots. Core aeration pulls out small plugs of soil, opening space for roots to grow and for water to soak in instead of running off.

What power raking does

Thatch is the layer of dead grass and stems that builds up between the green blades and the soil. A thin layer is normal. When it gets thicker than about half an inch, water and fertilizer have trouble getting through. Power raking, also called dethatching, pulls that layer out.

When to schedule it

For the cool-season grasses common around Chicago, early fall is usually the best time to aerate, with spring as a second option. Aerating right before overseeding gives new seed good contact with the soil. Keep up with regular mowing afterward and the lawn fills in faster.

Aeration and Power Raking questions

Should I leave the soil plugs on the lawn?

Yes. The plugs break down on their own within a couple of weeks of rain and mowing, and they return nutrients to the lawn.

How often should a lawn be aerated?

Once a year works for most lawns. Lawns with heavy clay soil or a lot of foot traffic may benefit from more.

What is the difference between aeration and power raking?

Aeration relieves compacted soil. Power raking removes built-up thatch. Some lawns need one, some need both. We will take a look before recommending either.
