Choosing plants that last

Northern Illinois winters are hard on plants that are not suited to them. We plant trees, shrubs and perennials that are hardy for this area and right for the spot, whether that is full sun by the driveway or shade under a mature tree. We can plant what you have already picked out, or talk through options with you.

Planted the right way

Trees and shrubs planted too deep tend to struggle for years. We dig a hole wider than the root ball, set the plant so the top of the root ball sits at or slightly above the soil line, backfill and water it in. A ring of mulch finishes the job and holds moisture, kept back from the trunk.

When to plant

Spring and early fall are the best times for trees and shrubs, when cooler weather is easier on new roots. Annual flowers go in after the last frost, usually around mid-May here. New plantings need regular watering through their first season.
