Mulch and Sod Installation

Fresh mulch makes beds look finished and helps the soil hold moisture. New sod fills bare or worn spots fast. We handle both, from edging the beds to telling you how to water the new grass.

What is included

  • Bed weeding and cleanup before mulching
  • Crisp edges cut along every bed
  • Mulch spread at an even depth
  • Mulch kept back from tree trunks and siding
  • Old turf removed and soil prepared for sod
  • Sod laid tight with staggered seams

Mulch, done right

Before any mulch goes down, we pull weeds, clear out old debris and cut a clean edge along the bed. Then we spread mulch at an even depth, usually two to three inches. That is enough to hold moisture and slow weeds without smothering plant roots.

We keep mulch pulled back from tree trunks and the base of your siding. Mulch piled against a trunk traps moisture against the bark and can lead to rot and pests.

Sod for bare spots and new lawns

For sod, we remove the old turf or weeds, loosen and level the soil, then lay the new rolls tight together with staggered seams so the edges knit in evenly. New sod needs frequent watering for the first couple of weeks while the roots grow into the soil. We will leave you a simple watering plan.

When to schedule

Mulch can go down any time the ground is not frozen, though most people refresh their beds in spring. Sod does best in spring and early fall, when the weather is cooler and the grass needs less water to take root.

Mulch and Sod questions

How often should mulch be refreshed?

Once a year is common, usually in spring. Many beds only need a top-up rather than a full new layer, which keeps the total depth from building up too high.

Can sod go down in the summer?

It can, but new sod needs a lot more water in July and August heat. Spring and early fall are easier on new sod and on your water bill.

Do you remove the old mulch first?

If the old layer is thick or matted, we can rake it out or loosen it before adding fresh mulch. We will tell you what we recommend when we see your beds.
