Trimming at the right time
Most shrubs and hedges look best with a trim in late spring or early summer, after the first flush of new growth, and another light trim later in the season if they grow fast.
Spring-flowering shrubs are different. Lilacs, forsythia and similar plants set next year’s flower buds over the summer, so we trim them right after they finish blooming. Trimming them in fall cuts off next spring’s flowers.
Shaped to stay healthy
We trim hedges slightly narrower at the top than at the bottom. That lets sunlight reach the lower branches, so the hedge stays full down to the ground instead of thinning out at the base. Overgrown shrubs that block walks, windows or siding get cut back to a manageable size.
Pair it with other services
Trimming is often done together with fresh mulch and a seasonal cleanup, so the beds look finished from front to back.

How often should hedges be trimmed?
Most hedges and shrubs look best with one or two trims a year. Fast-growing hedges may need a third trim to stay tight.
When should lilacs be trimmed?
Right after they finish blooming in late spring. Lilacs set next year’s flower buds during the summer, so trimming later can mean fewer flowers the next year.
Do you haul away the clippings?
Yes. Cleanup and haul-away of all clippings is part of every trimming job.
